There are two ways of doing this. You can create a still image from the desktop using cmd-shift-4 and take screen grab. Or, probably the best thing is to make a still when the clip is in iMovie. If you put the red line over the still you want and then press ctrl click (like a right click) and a menu will come up and you can click on 'add still frame to project'.
